The Town of Englee is nothing short of enchanting with beautiful coastlines, incredible vistas that surround the island and mainland part of this interconnected community. Truly the town has embraced their natural assets and are capitalizing on offering an advanced trail network that range from moderate to very strenuous. It is also one of the prettiest active fishing communities on the island.
Locker’s Point Trail is a strenuous linear trail that connects to Shoe Pond Hill Trail and the prize at the end is an incredible gazebo with an aerial view of the community. It is very strenuous but definitely worth the trek. The White Point Trail is a linear trail network that takes you through a forest and you can end near Barr’d Island Trail.
The Barr’d Island Trail is one of my absolute favourites on the Great Northern Peninsula. It is so many wonderful viewing places. First to get here you have to take the Viking (Route 430) and head North from Deer Lake. Then take Grenfell Drive (Route 432) before Plum Point and head to Roddickton-Bide Arm. After 56 KM you will take a right and 35 KM on Route 433 you will find your way to Englee. When you reach the stop sign by the Salvation Army, you must turn right and go past the bridge and take a left to the end of the road. Signage will direct you left to the designated parking and rest area. You simply can’t miss the bright red staircase, which is the beginning of Barr’d Island Trail.
The new public artwork, all done by locals highlights the importance of the fishery and other aspects of culture and tradition that make up community life in Englee.
This 1 KM loop is truly a gem, with various look-outs, seating areas, picnic tables and even a swing to enjoy the views of icebergs, whales, birds and fishing boats. The trail has recently been enhanced to include inspirational messages as you walk along the pathways.
I especially like the quote, “There is no wifi in the forest, but I promise, you will find a better connection”. Truly the Great Northern Peninsula and its abundance of nature will do your mind, body and soul a world of good.
This is by far the communities most popular trail and loved by locals and visitors alike. Englee has done such a remarkable job on their trail network and continues to do further upgrades. You may also want to visit the Rug Hooking Exhibition and the Glass Art at the Town Hall. There’s a wealth of beauty and talent that exists in this enchanting town. Be sure to add this historic fishing town to your places to visit in 2021 and beyond.
