Big Droke Heritage Trail

Big Droke Heritage Trail is an easy 3.2 KM return and takes you to Long Pond and also the registered archaeological site known as Caines Site which dates back as far as 4530 and 3470 years ago with the presence of Maritime Archaic People. Bird Cove has quite the story about time.

There are two entry points for this trail. I opted to park at the Town Hall and Community Center as the Heritage Trail will take you to Long Pond. The views will not disappoint. I saw the provincial flower, our pitcher plant growing in the boggy area and enjoyed walking through the forested area. I even saw a bunny! The trail is a blend of natural land and boardwalk. It would be rated as easy.

I made my way to the Caines Site, which are registered archaeological sites depicting tool production and other activities of the Maritime Archaic people dating back 50 centuries ago.

The Big Droke 1 Site is noted to be one of only few undisturbed Maritime Archaic people. There is much we can learn from the first people of Bird Cove and their history and many questions remain unanswered.

If you haven’t been to Bird Cove, well, it’s About Time! Also, visit the 50 Centuries Interpretation Centre and Dog Peninsula.
