The Town of Roddickton-Bide Arm is the self proclaimed “Moose Capital of the World” given the conditions surrounding the town are ideal habitat for moose. At one point it was estimated by wildlife that 7,000 moose resided in the region, so it’s quite fitting the Town Hall has an interpretation centre named after the Moose!
If you haven’t been to the Green Moose Interpretation Center at the Town Hall in Roddickton-Bide Arm, I highly recommend it.
One can see a polar bear, learn about wildlife, forestry, fishery, resettlement and life in these two towns that joined in 2009 to become one. Also, to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday, this town was selected to participate in creating a mosaic.
It was pretty amazing to be at the fire hall with many community members to paint some tiles. Residents from the seniors home, the school children and many others put their artistic talents to the test by being a part of something special – a lasting piece of art to commemorate Canada.
It was certainly no surprise that the major focal point is the moose, but also the forest and fishing sectors are prominent in the artwork. It’s incredible to take some time to see what people painted and what they see is something they love about the community, whether, the sleeping giant, The Farm or a favourite activity, place or feeling. It is worth seeing and one of only two in the province.
This interpretation centre is great for all ages, but an especially nice place to take children. I visited recently with my sister, brother-in-law and two nephews.
