Hiking the Southhead Lighthouse Trail ascends to the mountain range behind Lark Harbour. It’s an elevation gain of 370 metres and not one to be taken lightly, but the views at the top are well worth the effort.
You can begin at Bottle Cove and park at Beacon Road in Lark Harbour.
You begin by taking part of the Bottle Cove trail to the field and then you detour right to see the trailhead. A fenced area marks, what appears to be a former lighthouse along with some concrete blocks. There are benches and viewing areas along the way.
There is a nice waterfall early on the trail, but we opted to save the short detour for the return.
As you scale upward you just have to stop and look behind you at the beautiful views and know you will be rewarded at the top with completely different mountain and island views.
I loved this hike, despite it being more challenging on a hot day – it was indeed a favourite. I believe the return trip was around 7 KM.
What a great day hiking with my momma! Get out and explore Newfoundland and Labrador. Your backyard beckons!
