Gussets to Western Bay is a 12 KM return trail that takes you from Wharf Loop road in the Town of Small Point-Broad Cove-Blackhead-Adam’s Cove to Bradley’s Cove and Western Bay.
The trek first takes you to a resettled area that would be home to Gussets. Some interpretative panels and a cemetery makes the beginning.
Resettlement had taken place in areas of the Conception Bay North area too. These places no longer have year round residents, but have markers, old footings and even root cellars that would store vegetables dating back to the 1830s.
I had met a couple in the beginning who advised me the trial was a blueberry haven. The trail is basically now used for ATVs. It was nice to see people enjoying a ride and taking in the scenery along the shoreline.
There’s a cottage nestled and used by those who are connected to this resettled place. There was a school in the area. I met a gentleman whose mother was a teacher there. He pointed out a little more of what the community would have looked like pre-1970 and directed me to Crocker’s Root Cellar.
I enjoyed trekking up the road through Bradley’s Cove. I’ve been here before when I took the boardwalk in April to the lighthouse. It’s another great walking adventure along some impressive shores. Take your camera and enjoy the surroundings.
