On September 12, 2011, I issued a press release calling on the immediate removal and environmental clean-up of the abandoned Englee Fish Plant. It is now October 6, 2011 and no action has been taken by Government. They continue to ignore the issue, claiming there is an ownership issue. There was no ownership issue when the Government accidentally expropriated an asset (Abitibi Mill) in Grand Falls Windsor, only to leave us the taxpayer footing the bill for the clean-up and remediation of upwards of $200 million. This is a very serious matter, one only has to look at the image below to see this property is being pulled into the mighty sea, causing dangers and matters of public safety.
Since the issue of the press release, there has been an online petition created (http://www.petitiononline.com/Englee/petition.html), additional coverage in the media from Northern Pen, CBC Here & Now and St Anthony News. It is quite evident that this demolition can not wait any longer. It is self-destructing and imploding each day.
This matter is long overdue for removal. Englee wants to move on and move forward. It’s Time…
Christopher Mitchelmore NDP Candidate The Straits-White Bay North
This is ridiculous to go on a web site and see this. The government will take action about people having run down properties in most causes they are either forced to remove it themselves or pay the bill when they go in and do demo work.My husband is from the Northern peninsula and says his mother used to work at that very same plant and it should have been removed years ago look at all the damage that is being done here, polluting the ocean if that was one of us a individual look at the fine we would get and the charges we would be up on in court by DFO.I guess this is another cause of out of sight, out of mind the once they wont have to worry because it will be gone anyways when a good storm hits, another case of government being able to do what they want and get away with it.Then they wonders why people lose faith in government officials, sure there is a election on the arisen thats why and more promises will be made and not kept nothing seems to change, only want people votes and can not come through with promises made and they wonder why they get low voter turn out, sure people are sick of hearing the same thing over and over.Makes one wonder if we put a NDP candidate in can they do any worse damage then the liberals or pc party,or will somethings actually change?Something to think about isnt
The people of the Northern Peninsula…………………. the forgotten people by the PC Government. I know how MP Christopher Mitchelmore feels about thismess and environment hazard .I challenge all other politicians to voice their views on it, I would love to hear them.
