Notre Dame Cathedral – Paris, France

Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France

Cathedrale de Notre-Dame is one of the world’s most iconic and famous cathedrals. There are always crowds of people wishing to enter this landmark. It was founded in 1160 by Maurice de Sully, bishop of Paris. It survived wars of religion and battles. In 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor of France at this cathedral.

After Bonaparte’s downfall, there was much looting and the cathedral fell into disrepair and was slated for demolition. It was saved by Victor Hugo, as he campaigned for its restoration.

Rural Newfoundland and Labrador needs people like Victor Hugo, to fight to preserve aspects of our culture and history. We have very few pieces of architecture that would be more than 100 years of age, despite Newfoundland & Labrador having the oldest English settlement in North America.

It is up to us to promote new artists and also preserve the art of yesterday.
