The community of Conche is picturesque and a must visit when on the Great Northern Peninsula. It is known as the “Beauty Spot of the North” and is home to the French Shore Interpretation Centre.
Getting here has become a lot easier with the final tender issued last year to see Route 434 paved to Conche, NL as the gravel road was less attractive for visitors on this 20 KM highway. When driving into Conche you must stop at the top of Sailor Jack’s Hill for an incredible view of the surrounding area. On a clear day you’ll be able to see the Grey Islands on the horizon.
There’s a stairway that will lead you to a platform and viewing area with further interpretation. The platform is quite large, maybe it was built to host bus tours. In a world where social distancing is the new normal, this attraction certainly has ample space. There are wonderful views of Conche and you can see the beginning of Captain Coupelongue’s Trail that is currently undergoing upgrades.
When in Conche be sure to check out the Glass Hole Hiking Trail, Fox Head and Sleepy Cove. It’s also a place to discovery the abandoned islands that surround and learn more about the history of the French Shore.
